Verified against Social Security Administration — Disability on May 22, 2026.
Scam alert: many websites charge for apply for social security disability (ssdi / ssi).
The real cost is free to apply at SSA.gov through the official government source. SSA never charges to apply for disability and never threatens to suspend benefits if you don't pay. Disability attorneys are paid ONLY from back-pay, capped at ~$7,200 — never pay anything up front. OneClickGov only links to verified .gov pages.
Do not pay any website to do this for you.

Step by step
Understand SSDI vs. SSI before you apply[2]
SSDI: based on your past work history (Social Security taxes paid). Pays whatever your benefit amount is regardless of current assets. SSI: needs-based for very low-income / low-asset adults and children with disabilities. Many applicants qualify for both — SSA screens both in one intake.
Apply as soon as you stop being able to work[1]
SSDI has a 5-month waiting period — benefits don't start until the 6th full month of disability. The earlier you apply, the earlier your benefit clock starts. Don't wait until savings run out.
Be exhaustive about medical evidence[8]
DDS will only consider conditions documented by medical providers. Spell out every diagnosis, every provider, every test. Vague applications get denied. The Adult Disability Report (Form SSA-3373) is where you give the medical detail — fill it out carefully.
Sign Form SSA-827 — Authorization to Disclose Information[5]
This authorizes DDS to collect your medical records. Most applications are delayed because the applicant doesn't return the SSA-827 quickly. Sign and return immediately when SSA sends it.
Expect a denial on the first try — and appeal[3]
About 65% of initial SSDI claims are denied. The Reconsideration appeal (Form SSA-561) is fast and usually denied too. The Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (Form HA-501) is where most successful claims actually get approved. Have ALL appeal deadlines (60 days from denial) on your calendar.
Consider a disability attorney — but only on contingency[9]
Disability attorneys are paid only if you win, capped by SSA at 25% of back-pay (max ~$7,200). They DO improve outcomes at the hearing stage. Never pay anything up front — that's a red flag.
Common reasons this gets rejected
Applying without complete medical records
DDS will only consider documented conditions. If you have a serious diagnosis but no provider visits to back it up, get to a doctor before applying. Vague medical evidence = denial.
Missing the 60-day appeal deadline
Every denial has a 60-day appeal window. Miss it and you have to start over from scratch — losing months of back-pay eligibility.
Not coordinating with private long-term disability
Private LTD policies usually offset SSDI dollar-for-dollar. SSDI back-pay can trigger a large LTD reimbursement demand. Read your LTD policy before applying.
Paying anyone up front for help
Legitimate disability attorneys work on contingency — paid only if you win, only out of back-pay, capped by SSA. Anyone asking for hundreds up front is a scam.
