Step by step
Pick the service that matches your travel date[1]
Travel in 14+ days: pay $60 expedite by mail or at any facility. Travel in 14 days or less: you need a Passport Agency or Center appointment.
For mail renewals: write EXPEDITE in big letters[1]
On the outside of the envelope, in large block letters above the delivery address. Include the $60 fee plus optional $22.05 for fast return mail.
For Passport Agency (urgent): call 1-877-487-2778[2]
Appointments at the 26 U.S. Passport Agencies and Centers are released 2 weeks ahead and book up fast. Call as soon as your travel is confirmed.
Or use a registered private expediting company[1]
For travel >14 days but faster than 2 weeks, registered expediters can hand-carry to the agency for a service fee on top of government fees. Confirm they're registered with the State Department.
Track your status
Status updates begin about 2 weeks after the application is received.
Common reasons this gets rejected
Showing up at a Passport Agency without an appointment
Walk-ins are not accepted. All Agency/Center visits require a phone-booked appointment.
Forgot to write EXPEDITE on the mail envelope
Mail expedites are sorted by the envelope label. No label = routine processing even if you paid the $60.
Paying expedite fee but not 1–2 day delivery
Expedite only speeds the GOVERNMENT processing. Return mail is regular USPS unless you pay the extra $22.05.
Booking an agency appointment for travel >14 days
Agency slots are reserved for life-or-death and travel within 14 days. Booking outside that window is denied at check-in.
