Step by step
Pick the right type of transcript[2]
Tax Return Transcript: shows most line items from your 1040 — needed for mortgage applications, FAFSA, USCIS, immigration filings. Account Transcript: shows payments, penalties, and adjustments — best for IRS disputes and payment-plan setups. Wage & Income Transcript: shows W-2s and 1099s the IRS received — needed if you lost forms. Record of Account: combines the above two. Verification of Non-Filing: proves you didn't file (for FAFSA, etc.).
Try online first — instant download[1]
Go to irs.gov/transcript and click 'Get Transcript Online'. You'll verify identity with ID.me (mobile phone + government ID + selfie). PDF downloads instantly after verification.
If online doesn't work, use Get Transcript by Mail[1]
Same page, easier verification — just SSN, address, and filing status. Mailed to the address on the most recent return within 5–10 days. Works for Tax Return and Account transcripts only.
For Wage & Income / older years, file Form 4506-T[3]
The online tool only goes back ~3 years for Wage & Income. For older transcripts or to send the transcript to a third party, fax or mail Form 4506-T to the address on the form's instructions.
Common reasons this gets rejected
Paying a third party for a 'free' IRS transcript
Multiple sites charge $20–$50 to 'help' get an IRS transcript. They're filling out Form 4506-T for you. Skip them — irs.gov/transcript is free and faster.
Confusing a transcript with a return copy
A transcript is a free, abbreviated summary. A full copy of your return (Form 4506) costs $43 and takes 75 days. Lenders, USCIS, and FAFSA all accept transcripts — they almost never need the full copy.
Using current address when you've moved
Get Transcript by Mail sends to the address on the most recent return on file. If you've moved without filing Form 8822, your transcript goes to your old address.
Trying online verification without a U.S. mobile phone in your name
ID.me needs a mobile phone in your legal name. Prepaid, family-plan, or work phones often fail. If verification fails twice, switch to mail.
