Bring these documents
Step by step
File online at myUSCIS (preferred)[1]
Online filing is faster and cheaper than paper. You can upload photos of the card and supporting documents directly.
Confirm the current fee
Fees changed in 2026 — the calculator gives the exact combined filing + biometric amount.
Attend biometrics[1]
USCIS schedules fingerprints 2–8 weeks after filing. The receipt notice extends your green card by 36 months for I-9/travel proof.
Travel with receipt notice if needed[1]
I-90 receipt notice + expired green card = automatic 36-month extension. Some employers/airlines may need additional proof — call USCIS for an ADIT stamp if traveling.
Receive new card by mail
New 10-year green card arrives by USPS. Update your address in myUSCIS if you move before delivery.
Common reasons this gets rejected
Wrong reason code in Part 2
Replacing a lost card (Section A box 1) vs renewing an expiring card (Section B box 1) have different fees and evidence. Pick wrong = rejection.
Filing I-90 when you should file N-400 instead
If you're already eligible to naturalize, paying for a new green card may be wasted money — apply for citizenship instead.
Wrong fee amount
I-90 has filing + biometric components. Underpay either and the package is returned.
