Step by step
Step 1[1]
Confirm you're eligible to renew online: unexpired registration, no overdue property taxes on any vehicle you own, vehicle insured 45+ days with the same insurer, vehicle is not leased, and your plate type is on the eligible list.
Step 2[1]
If your address has changed, contact your County Clerk to update it BEFORE renewing online — your new registration is mailed to the address on file with the Clerk.
Step 3[2]
Renew online at the official portal — be wary of third-party sites that charge extra and will NOT actually renew your registration.
Step 4[4]
If you can't renew online, visit your County Clerk's office in your county of residence with your title/registration, KY photo ID, and current proof of insurance.
Step 5[1]
Vehicles registered in different counties under the same owner must be renewed SEPARATELY.
Common reasons this gets rejected
Insurance hasn't been in force 45 days with the same insurer
The state's insurance verification database needs at least 45 days of continuous coverage with the same company before the online portal will accept your renewal. Recently switched carriers? Renew in person.
Overdue property tax on ANY vehicle you own
If you're behind on ad valorem tax for any vehicle in your name, the online system blocks all your renewals. Pay through the County Clerk first.
Using a third-party 'renewal' website
DRIVE explicitly warns about scam sites that charge fees but never submit your renewal. Use only drive.ky.gov links or your County Clerk's office.
Trying to renew a leased vehicle online
Leased vehicles cannot be renewed online — you must go to the County Clerk in person.
Address on file is outdated
Your new registration is mailed to the address the County Clerk has on file. Move recently? Update with the Clerk first or your tags go to your old address.
Registration was cancelled (lapsed insurance, etc.)
A cancelled registration requires a $40 reinstatement fee at the County Clerk on top of the renewal — you can't fix this online (KRS 186.040(8), effective 2024).
